The Claw! (Jack Cole)
Imagine you're eleven years old, with the typical hyperactive imagination. Just before going to sleep, you read this issue of SILVER STREAK COMICS, perferably with a flashlight under the covers, and spend some time studying the cover. Pleasant dreams, kid. This was issue number 6, September 1940. The "world's most fantastic criminal" is called the Green Claw throughout and in his logo, although the modifier was for that one issue only. For an artist famous for comedy and burlesque, Jack Cole could sure pile on the horrifying details. Is that moss hanging off the Claw's bony fingers, off his eyebrows? Aren't those little skulls showing in his pupils?  Two of the victims in his grasp seem to be already dead, judging by their staring eyes, and the guy to our far right is being crushed at this very moment. Sheesh. See why moms wanted their kids to pick up MICKEY MOUSE instead?

By the way, I'm assuming you know that "The Claw" is back again?

No, I hadn't seen it. Thanks for the link though. That is remarkably shiny and reflective art... very Disco in a way. The original Daredevil and the Claw just keep coming back in one version or another; you have to admire their tenacity. (Being public domain isn't the hopeless limbo it was once thought to be.0
