All you can eat with Trots and Bonnie
From the July 1979 issue of THE NATIONAL LAMPOON, this charming little episode in the life of Trots and Bonnie seems way out of place in that magazine after the first few years (that is, it's not trying desperately to be shocking and gross). Instead, it's a bit of whimsy. I like the assortment of goofy-looking people lining up in the first panel, and the body language of Bonnie's family as they dig in is completely unforced and convincing. Shary Flenniken is one of the greatly under-appreciated artists to spring from the undergrounds, in my opinion.

T & B did occasionally feature more 'mature' storiy lines, altho thankfully not often. It just didn't feel right those few times when Bonnie and her friend appeared undressed.

The strip got darker toward the end, with Pepsi kidnapping a little boy who accidentally got shot to death. Maybe the editors were pushing Flenniken in that direction, maybe it was her own inclinations.

And I've wondered if a strip about a young girl with red hair and blank eyeballs, discussing her problems with her dog, might have been inspired by LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE.

Unfortunately, Flenniken's gentle and understated amiability may be precisely the reason posterity has overlooked her work.

(Another installment I specifically remember had Bonnie in a band playing a lesbian ball; the hit of the evening, to everyone's surprise, turned out to be their silly song about citrus fruit.)

This page from 1976? I know I have the rest here somewhere.

That'd be the one.

There doesn't seem to any book compilations of "Trots and Bonnie". It was one of my favorites from the Lampoon and I really wish that there was some "Trots and Bonnie" books in publication... *sighs*

trots an bonnie oct 1985
I think it was in this "Music" issue - Bonnie and pepsi started and all-girl band, and one by one fired all the members until it was just the two of them; then they had falling-out. It was one of the most hilariously accurate portrayal of some of my years as a musician in all-girl bands back the I wish someone [hint hint] would scan it and make it available for all to see... ;p

I apologize for taking months to answer your comment, I don't come back here that often. Let me dig through my old NATIONAL LAMPOON issues...
